On the website, there are beautiful photos of rooms. Because of the prices that we were asked to pay ($199 and $279 a night), we thought we would be renting one of those beautiful rooms and were really looking forward to a terrific value. When we get to the hotel the service was horrible. The people behind the counter obviously...

You woud have a better time paying a stranger to steal your luggage than you would staying at the The Chelsea Hotel, so I am posting this to save others from being stuck in this dump.
We arrived late, paid in advance at reception and then went upstairs to the room to crash out. It was US$200 a night.

Leonard Cohen began his song about an encounter with Janis Joplin with these lyrics, and I have wanted to stay in this legendary hotel ever since I first heard the song. There are reports that the historic landmark has been sold, so not knowing what the future holds for the hotel, I wanted to get in before it changes.

It's an exceptional place for non conventional travellers. The room was spacious, clean enough (window glasses little dusty, though), and comfortable. The guys at the front desk, efficient and helpfull. So, if you´re a solo traveller -or with company- looking for a truly bohemian but comfortable atmosphere, the Cheslea is a great option in NY.I´ll be back.

My friend Bob and I stayed in the Chelsea Hotel May 1st-5th... and we had a fantastic time! ALL of the staff (especially Pete when we first checked in and the women we encountered cleaning) were all very friendly and helpful. The location could not have been better - literally steps away from the 1-2-3 train, and the surrounding Chelsea...

Pros: Historic Hotel, with incredible detailing, decorations and overall atmosphere.
Cons: You are here for the experience and the ambiance, not the amenities (there are none). Bathroom looks like an off campus apartment (only cleaner).
For those seeking the opportunity to say that they stayed in the same hotel as (INSERT famous poet, artist, rock star, etc. HERE) you can...

My boyfriend and i stayed for 5 nights mid march 2011. Chose this hotel because of the history and location. It has not has many great reviews so was a little dubious as to what we would walk into. Front desk staff, and all other staff were very helpful and friendly from the moment we arrived to us leaving. The room...

I am a traveler with a well-developed palate for quirkiness, and so I was ever-so-excited to stay at the famously eclectic Chelsea Hotel.
It was so, so lovely. And so, so not.
I didn't deal with any of the horror stories described by some other users, but I don't need to stay there again.
First, the good: the neighborhood is...

Rooms were old school stylish & clean enough. Good bathrooms, good beds, good sheets & towels
Staff was helpful yet reserved. Expect some confusion re: your reservation and fight for what you reserved. They'll work it out. They always do.
Freedom to move about and enjoy the history & art & residents & fellow guests & jump around from room...

I love Chelsea so find it hard to rate the Chelsea Hotel badly. So I won't, nor I can't. Book early and you can pick up a good room (with a bathroom) for $140 AUD per night. The rooms aren't flash but they are full of character and make staying at the Chelsea Hotel a wonderful experience.
