Basically this is a good place to stay. It is very convenient for the best Manhattan has to offer, quiet enough to rest well and adjacent to good food stores and restaurants. It is safe, pretty clean and the hosts are not unfriendly. But...I stayed in the basement - 'The Mission'. The steps down are very steep and, if you...

After spending close to two months and $25,000 dollars on a complete remodel so recently in time that the ink on the check we wrote to the contractor is still drying, the guest’s comment “Time for the owners to reinvest to polish the place” is inappropriate. We can only say for the reader to please pull up the numerous photos... more

We stayed at the 1871 as an experimental alternative to the major hotel chain properties that we usually book when visiting NYC and we won't go back to hotel life now. For orientation, the 1871 is a 3 minute walk from Bloomingdales, 5 minutes walk from the bottom of Central Park and in an elegant, classy neighbourhood. 1871 is on...

Pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of the room. Service was top notch. Nice to have a Parisian style breakfast and happy hour included. Stay on a lower floor if you don't want to wait for the single elevator which was slow at busy hours. Traffic noise was loud on the street side, so we were able to switch to the...

First of all, I will give credit where credit is due. The 1871 House is in a great location, handy to the subway and some great restaurants. The suite was very nicely decorated and quite comfortable. As other posters have mentioned, the water temperature fluctuated but this is understandable due to the age of the building. I found it a...

We are very sorry that this unfortunate incident so negatively impacted this guest’s stay. Most of our guests understand it is standard hotel policy to bill guests for extra expenses incurred or damages as a result of their stay. The $75 fee charged to remedy the situation and remove the coffee stains they created was well within the fee range... more

We loved the room from the start in this tastefully renovated brown stone house. We were in The Parlour Suite on the first floor, a spacious room with elegant high ceilings and 3 big windows looking out onto a road just busy enough to be interesting but not noisy. Upper East side is a wonderful location managing to create a...

We thank the guests for taking the time to mention a few of their thoughts and appreciate the comments. We are located in an amazing part of the city and love it here ourselves. We would like to address the one slight disappointment that the guests mentioned in regard to a lack of interactions with the hosts and other guests.... more

Once again, we traveled from Boston to NYC and stayed at the 1871 House. I forgot how much I love NYC and enjoy this amazing B&B! We met the inn owner, who was warm, friendly and helpful! She gave us a great suggestion for dinner - only a few blocks away as well as directions to my favorite bagel shop!...

I returned from my last trip to New York conflicted about my stay at the 1871 House. The location was perfect, the room large and gracious, the bed comfortable and the walk up one flight of stairs to the Parlor Room not strenuous. However the first two days of my stay were marred by an odd odor in my room....

Occasional mouse or insects can be a problem in virtually any building in virtually any city-especially an older city like New York or within an urban environment. The reality is unlike what the guest mentioned that we said, older buildings can often be less prone to mice than new buildings in that they have had a longer history of being... more

1871 House is a charming, comfortable, clean, affordable, and safe place to stay. Our room, The Parlor Studio, was large -very large for Manhattan standards- and tastefully decorated. The Parlor has a small “kitchenette” with everything we needed: Toaster/Bake Oven, Microwave Oven, Coffee Maker, Electric Kettle for tea, small sink, small Refrigerator, Silverware and Copeland Spode Red Tower pattern English...

I just love staying at the 1871 House. The rooms have such an old world charm about them. The location is the best in town - close to great shopping on 5th Avenue, steps from the subway and Central Park. The staff is wonderful and so helpful - so much better than unhappy hotel employees. This was my second stay...
